8 // via cellphone: the LBJ treatment
My first visit to the National Press Club was in 2003, courtesy of a friend who was (and maybe is) a member of the board. He showed me this picture then and told me it was the famous Lyndon Johnson “treatment.” Johnson would use a variety of techniques to browbeat fellow senators into doing what he wanted, and nothing shows that better than this series of photographs.
I returned to the press club Feb. 20 for a computer aided reporting class, and I made a point to search out and take a cell phone snap of this picture. Dealing with power and influence every day, it’s fascinating to see it so ably practiced in an unguarded moment.
(Naturally, I forgot to get the details on the plaque, but I found a good representation of the photo and additional details here.)
